Summary

The Tatacoa Desert is an arid landscape in Colombia, with eroded red and grey formations. Narrow gullies, ridges and exposed ground create intricate patterns within an environment that contrasts with much of the surrounding country.

The detail of erosion is what makes Tatacoa so compelling. Small changes in height produce miniature landscapes of remarkable complexity, with colour helping make the forms and layers clear.

Getting there

Use Villavieja as the last town before the Tatacoa landscapes and arrange local transport to the red and grey erosion areas. Keep the return transfer separate from the walking time.

Plan ahead

Arrange a local guide for the labyrinth-like formations and contact an observatory for an evening session. Keep the night plan flexible because cloud can prevent a useful astronomy visit.

A detail that changes the visit
