Summary

Mompox is a historic river town in Colombia, connected with the Magdalena river system. Churches, waterfront buildings and courtyards preserve a trading settlement whose form reflects its relationship with moving water.

It offers a different view of Colombia from its better-known coastal cities. The river setting explains the town’s streets and former importance, linking architectural detail with a broader transport landscape.

History, landscape and context.

Mompox, officially Santa Cruz de Mompós, is a town and municipality in northern Colombia, in the Bolívar Department. The town initially grew from its proximity to the Magdalena River and has preserved much of its colonial character. It also played an important role in the independence of America from Spain. Mampo (or Mompoj) was the local indigenous chieftain (cacique) of the Malibu culture, when the Spanish conquistadors arrived, and Mompox means "land of the ruler Mampo". The city was founded on May 3, 1537, by Alonso de Heredia, brother of Pedro de Heredia, as a safe port on the Magdalena.
