Summary

Ferrara is a historic city in northern Italy, with medieval streets and areas shaped by Renaissance planning. Palaces, walls and public spaces record changing ambitions for how a city should grow.

The contrast between organic growth and deliberate design is particularly clear. Streets and buildings reveal planning as a visible historical act, rather than simply a backdrop to individual monuments.
