Summary

Cartagena is a historic Caribbean port in Colombia, with walls, fortifications, squares and colourful streets. Its architecture reflects centuries of maritime trade, colonial power and the difficult histories connected with them.

The relationship between the fortified shore and the lived-in city gives it depth. Large defensive works and intimate streets tell different parts of the same port history.

The story of a place

A Caribbean port whose walls contain a complicated history.

Cartagena's colour and balconies create an immediate appeal, but its fortifications and urban history deserve equal attention. The city grew through maritime trade, colonial power and the suffering of enslaved people.

A good visit moves between the walled centre, defensive works and neighbourhood life. Interpretation should make room for difficult history alongside architectural beauty.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

Cartagena, known since the imperial era as Cartagena de Indias, is a city and one of the major ports on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region, along the Caribbean Sea. Cartagena's past role as a link in the route to the West Indies provides it with important historical value for world exploration and preservation of heritage from the great commercial maritime routes. As a former Spanish colony, it was a key port for the export of Bolivian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system.
