Summary

The Okavango Delta is a wetland landscape in Botswana, where river water spreads into the Kalahari region. Channels, islands and seasonally flooded habitats support wildlife within a setting defined by moving water.

The Okavango is a landscape defined by moving water in a dry region. Its changing channels and islands create wildlife encounters that differ fundamentally from open-plains safari.

Getting there

Fly to Maun, then continue by light aircraft or an arranged road and boat transfer appropriate to your camp. Confirm baggage limits and how connections are coordinated before fixing international flights.

Plan ahead

Ask which activities are possible at that camp during your dates. Water levels may rule out boating or mokoro trips in some areas. Follow specialist guides around wildlife and never swim in delta channels.

A closer look

Why it stays with you

The result is a complex habitat for wildlife. Permanent channels, seasonally flooded grassland and drier woodland support different experiences, from birdwatching along reeds to vehicle-based game viewing around islands. A mokoro journey provides a low, quiet perspective close to the water, when conditions and the camp's location allow it.

Choosing a camp is therefore a choice about habitat and activities, not just accommodation. Some areas focus on water, others on game drives, and many change through the year. A combination of two carefully selected camps can reveal more than repeated transfers across a long list of locations.

Understand the wonder

Water moves the safari.

The Okavango's interest lies in the relationship between floodwater, dry ground and wildlife. The seasonal flood does not simply coincide with local rain, and water levels affect which activities are available around a particular camp. A mokoro outing, motorboat journey and game drive offer different perspectives. Choosing camps for habitat and activity is more useful than assuming any lodge can provide the whole delta experience. The landscape is dynamic rather than a fixed blue patch on a map.

Beyond the familiar view

Water determines the day.

The Okavango is not one uniform wetland experience. Water levels, habitat and a camp's location shape which outings are possible. Watching the relationship between water, vegetation and animal movement can make the whole stay more meaningful.

The choice that changes the visit

Choose camps by the experiences available in your season and ask about the transfer chain. A mokoro outing is not automatically part of every delta stay.

Think beyond a single stop

Combine it with…

Cape Town, Victoria Falls and the Okavango bring together city-and-coast scenery, a great river spectacle and a wetland safari. This route works best with a deliberately small number of bases.
