Summary

Zacatecas is a historic mining city in Mexico, folded into steep terrain. Churches, carved stone façades and urban spaces reflect the wealth and labour associated with the region’s mineral resources.

The relationship between topography and architecture gives it character. Monumental detail and tightly fitted streets show how a mining economy shaped both the appearance and the form of the city.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Zacatecas is the principal city within the municipality in Mexico of the same name, and the capital of the state of Zacatecas. Located in north-central Mexico, the city had its start as a Spanish mining camp in the mid-16th century. Native Americans had already known about the area's rich deposits of silver and other minerals. As municipal seat, the city of Zacatecas is the governmental authority for 180 other named localities, which total an area of 444 km2 (171 sq mi). Ninety-three percent of the municipality's population of 132,035 lives in the city proper. There are no indigenous communities in the municipalities with almost all of the population being "mestizo" or mixed indigenous-European.
