Summary

Querétaro is a historic city in central Mexico, with squares, courtyards and a monumental aqueduct. Its streets preserve different periods of urban growth within a coherent built centre.

The combination of public spaces and water engineering is distinctive. The aqueduct explains a practical part of city life, while the surrounding architecture reveals civic and religious ambition.

History, landscape and context.

Santiago de Querétaro, most commonly known as Querétaro, is the capital and largest city of the state of Querétaro, located in central Mexico. It is part of the macroregion of Bajío. It is 213 kilometres (132 mi) northwest of Mexico City, 63 kilometres (39 mi) southeast of San Miguel de Allende and 200 kilometres (120 mi) south of San Luis Potosí. The city is a strong business and economic centre and a vigorous service centre that is experiencing an ongoing social and economic revitalisation. All this has resulted in high levels of migration from other parts of Mexico.
