Summary

Morelia is a historic city in Mexico, with pink-stone churches, civic buildings and courtyards. A coherent street plan gives the centre a strong architectural identity shaped by the repeated use of its local material.

The unity is its attraction. Major façades and small spaces belong to the same visual language, allowing the city to be appreciated as a whole as well as through individual monuments.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Morelia is the capital and most populous city of the Mexican state of Michoacán. Situated in the Guayangareo Valley in the north-central part of the state, it is the municipal seat of the municipality of Morelia. The main pre-Hispanic cultures here were the Purépecha and the Matlatzinca, but no major cities were founded in the valley during this time. What would become the city of Morelia was founded by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza and a number of encomenderos in 1541, who first named it Nueva Ciudad de Michoacán (New City of Michoacán).
