Summary

Issyk-Kul is a large mountain lake in Kyrgyzstan, enclosed by ranges of the Tian Shan. Settlements and cultural landscapes along its shores connect the open water with the wider history of Central Asia.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Issyk-Kul (Russian: Иссык-Куль) or Ysyk-Köl is an endorheic saline lake in the western Tian Shan mountains in eastern Kyrgyzstan; just south of a dividing range separating Kyrgyzstan from Kazakhstan. It is the eighth-deepest lake in the world, the eleventh-largest lake in the world by volume, and the second-largest saline lake. It is located at an elevation of 1,607 metres (5,272 ft). Issyk-Kul Lake was a stopover on the Silk Road, a land route for travellers from the Far East to Europe. The great Chinese Buddhist scholar-monk Xuanzang passed by this lake and noted the details in the classic travelogue Great Tang Records on the Western Regions in the 7th century.
