The story of a place
A temple landscape with an extraordinary vertical rhythm.
Prambanan's main towers draw the eye upwards, but the experience becomes richer through the carved narrative panels and the smaller structures around them. The site belongs to a wider religious and archaeological landscape near Yogyakarta.
Earthquake damage and restoration are part of the modern story. Nearby temple groups provide useful contrasts, so leave time beyond the most photographed central view.

The essential experience
Make time for this.
Walk around the principal temples slowly enough to follow a sequence of reliefs.
Explore the highlights
Look a little closer.
Look from Prambanan’s soaring towers towards the carved stories around their bases.
Tower profiles
Study how repeated layers build height.
Narrative panels
Look for scenes rather than isolated decorative figures.
Restoration
Notice the distinction between surviving stones and reconstructed arrangements.

and context.
Prambanan (Indonesian: Candi Prambanan, Javanese: Rara Jonggrang, Hanacaraka: ꦫꦫꦗꦺꦴꦁꦒꦿꦁ) is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, in southern Java, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimūrti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu), and the Destroyer (Shiva). The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) northeast of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia after Angkor Wat. It is characterised by its tall pointed architecture, typical of Hindu architecture, and by the towering 47-metre-high (154 ft) central building inside a large complex of individual temples.
