Summary

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia, within a broad volcanic amphitheatre. Ash plains, neighbouring cones and steep surrounding ridges produce one of the region’s most recognisable mountain landscapes.

The appeal is the arrangement of contrasting volcanic forms. Smoke, bare ground and changing cloud make the landscape feel active, while its Hindu significance adds a human dimension to the geological scene.

The story of a place

A volcanic amphitheatre shaped by ash, cloud and morning light.

The Bromo landscape is a group of volcanic forms rather than one isolated cone. Bromo, Batok and the wider caldera create the layered scene seen from the surrounding ridges, with more distant mountains appearing when conditions allow.

The classic sunrise is only one part of a visit. Time to examine the caldera landscape and understand local religious significance makes the experience more than a crowded viewpoint stop.
