Summary

Acadia National Park protects a coastal landscape in Maine, United States, including granite summits, woodland and lakes. Atlantic shorelines and wooded interiors fit together within a relatively compact region.

The closeness of sea and mountain gives the park its character. Different viewpoints connect exposed rock, sheltered water and forest, making the landscape varied without depending on immense distances.

Bar Harbor or Mount Desert Island

Getting there

Use Bar Harbor or another Mount Desert Island base. The seasonal Island Explorer serves many park stops, but it does not serve Cadillac Summit Road.

Plan ahead

Buy the park pass and, when the seasonal scheme applies, a separate Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation. Campsites also require their own booking; a park pass alone does not reserve a summit drive.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Acadia National Park is a national park of the United States located along the mid-section of the Maine coast, southwest of Bar Harbor. The park includes about half of Mount Desert Island, part of Isle au Haut, the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula, and portions of sixteen smaller outlying islands. The park contains the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Coast of the United States (Cadillac Mountain), exposed granite domes, glacial erratics, U-shaped valleys, and cobble beaches. Its mountains, lakes, streams, wetlands, forests, meadows, and coastlines contribute to a diversity of plants and animals. Woven into this landscape is a historic carriage road system financed by John D.
