Summary

The Greater Blue Mountains are a protected upland landscape in Australia, with sandstone plateaux, deep valleys and extensive forests. Escarpments and varied plant communities give the region a distinctive geological and ecological character.

The structure of the country is unusually legible from its edges. Broad forested valleys reveal the scale, while closer habitats explain the diversity beneath the apparent uniformity of green cover.

History, landscape and context.

The Greater Blue Mountains Area is a World Heritage Site located in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. The 1,032,649-hectare (2,551,730-acre) area was placed on the World Heritage List at the 24th Session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Cairns in 2000. The Greater Blue Mountains Area consists of 10,300 square kilometres (4,000 sq mi) of mostly forested landscape on a sandstone plateau, 60 to 180 kilometres (37 to 112 mi) inland from the Sydney central business district. The area includes vast expanses of wilderness and is equivalent in area to Lebanon.

Plan your visit.

Physical demands
Clifftop viewpoints allow short walks; valley descents involve many stairs and a substantial climb back out. Track grades and closures matter more than straight-line distance.
The consequential detail
Track closures, fire conditions and steep stairways can alter the route; check the chosen walking area.
