Summary

Kandy is a historic city in Sri Lanka, with a lake and the important Buddhist Temple of the Tooth. Sacred buildings and surrounding streets reflect the city’s role in the history of the Kandyan kingdom.

The continuing religious life gives the architecture its meaning. Water, ceremony and royal history form a coherent setting, making the city more than a picturesque lakeside stop.

Getting there

Reach Kandy by road or rail, then centre the visit on the lake and Temple of the Tooth. Peradeniya's botanic garden is a separate transfer from the central temple precinct.

Plan ahead

Check Temple of the Tooth visiting and ceremony times before setting the day's order. Reserve train seats separately if a particular departure is important, especially when continuing into the hill country.

History, landscape and context.

Kandy is a major city located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy from 1469 to 1818, under the Kingdom of Kandy. The city is situated in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau.
