Summary

The Great Ocean Road Coast is a stretch of southern Australia where cliffs, headlands and sea stacks meet the ocean. Erosion has created arches and isolated limestone forms, including the celebrated Twelve Apostles.

Its value is the sequence of changing coastal shapes. The road connects different stages of erosion, turning the shoreline into a landscape that explains how waves remake the land.

Getting there

Plan a coastal road trip with overnight stops, using Apollo Bay and Port Campbell as useful stages. The Twelve Apostles are near Princetown; check Victorian road notices before choosing the coastal or inland approach.

Plan ahead

Reserve overnight accommodation and any organised excursion before committing to the driving schedule. Check the Twelve Apostles visitor arrangements while the new visitor centre is being introduced in 2026.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

The Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage-listed 240-kilometre (150 mi) stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia, between the Victorian towns of Torquay and Allansford. Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932, and dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I, the road is the world's largest war memorial. Winding through varying terrain along the Western District coast, and providing access to several prominent landmarks, including the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations, the road is an important tourist attraction.

From inspiration to a practical plan

Plan your visit.

Physical demands
Many clifftop lookouts use short paths, while beach access can involve long stairways. Allow breaks from driving and choose walks separately from the road mileage.
The consequential detail
Coastal erosion is active; stay within barriers and avoid turning a long road trip into a rushed return drive.
