Summary

Pisa’s cathedral square in Italy brings together the cathedral, baptistery, cemetery and the famous leaning bell tower. Pale stone buildings stand within an unusually open setting, revealing their proportions and relationships.

The tower is only one part of the achievement. Seeing the ensemble together explains the city’s architectural ambition and makes its sculptural detail and ceremonial planning as interesting as the celebrated lean.

The story of a place

A monumental ensemble whose tower is only one part of the design.

Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli is most impressive when the cathedral, baptistery, campanile and cemetery are understood together. The famous lean attracts attention, but the sculptural and architectural detail is equally rewarding.

The city beyond the square provides a useful change of scale. A riverside walk prevents the visit from becoming only a queue and a photograph.

History, landscape
and context.

The Piazza dei Miracoli, formally known as Piazza del Duomo ('Cathedral Square'), is a walled 8.87-hectare (21.9-acre) compound in central Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, recognised as an important centre of European medieval art and one of the finest architectural complexes in the world. It was all owned by the Catholic Church and is dominated by four great religious edifices: Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistery, the Leaning Tower of Pisa (the cathedral's campanile or bell tower), and the Camposanto Monumentale ('Monumental Cemetery'). Partly paved and partly grassed, the Piazza dei Miracoli is also the site of the Ospedale Nuovo di Santo Spirito ('New Hospital of the Holy Spirit'), which now houses the Sinopias Museum (Museo delle Sinopie) and the Cathedral Museum (Museo dell'Opera del Duomo).
