Summary

Durmitor is a mountain massif and national park in Montenegro, with limestone peaks, glacial lakes and deep river country. Forest and open upland landscapes surround a compact group of sharply formed mountains.

Its variety gives it particular appeal. Clear lakes offer an intimate scale beneath the peaks, while nearby canyon landscapes extend the geological story far below the mountain skyline.

The story of a place

A mountain massif of lakes, limestone and deep river country.

Durmitor combines sharp peaks with forested lakes and the wider Tara canyon landscape. The scenery changes rapidly between sheltered water and exposed high routes, making route choice central to the experience.

Žabljak provides a practical starting point, but the national park is not one compact walking circuit. Give different areas their own time.
