Summary

Garajonay National Park protects laurel forest on La Gomera in Spain’s Canary Islands. Moisture carried by cloud sustains a woodland landscape of moss, shaded trees and dense vegetation on the island’s uplands.

The forest offers a striking contrast with drier volcanic surroundings. Its enclosed atmosphere and small living details reveal a habitat whose importance is easy to miss from distant island views.

The story of a place

A cloud forest whose atmosphere comes from moisture and close detail.

Garajonay protects laurel forest on the high ground of La Gomera. Moss, trunks, ferns and drifting cloud produce an intimate landscape, quite different from a distant mountain panorama.

The forest is most rewarding on a carefully chosen walking route. Shorter loops can offer a rich experience without committing to a long cross-island hike.
