Summary

Teide National Park protects a high volcanic landscape on Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands. Mount Teide rises above a broad caldera environment of lava, rock formations and sparse mountain vegetation.

The contrast with the island’s coastal image is extraordinary. Volcanic colours and exposed forms make the mountain’s history visible, while the scale of the summit gives the surrounding landscape a powerful focus.

The story of a place

A high volcanic landscape above the familiar image of Tenerife.

Teide National Park reveals a different Tenerife: lava fields, caldera walls and high-altitude views replace the island's coastal resort landscape. The summit dominates, but the surrounding formations are substantial attractions in their own right.

Cableway access and summit access are separate matters. A satisfying visit can focus on permitted lower routes without attempting the highest point.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

The national park is centred on Mount Teide, the highest mountain of Spain (3,718 metres high) in addition, the highest volcano in the Atlantic Ocean islands and the third highest volcano in the world from its base in the ocean floor (7.500 metres high). Pico Viejo, also included within the national park limits, is the second highest volcano in the Canary Islands with its 3,135 m peak. Mount Teide and Pico Viejo are the only two peaks in the Canary islands rising above the 3,000 m level. The park has an area of 18,990 hectares located in the municipality of La Orotava.
