Summary

The Kathmandu Valley is a cultural landscape in Nepal, with historic squares, temples, courtyards and major Buddhist stupas. Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur preserve different expressions of religious and civic life within the same inhabited valley.

The Kathmandu Valley offers an exceptional concentration of living sacred places and Newar architecture. Ritual, craftsmanship and urban life remain closely connected across its different towns.

Getting there

Fly into Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport and arrange transport to your chosen neighbourhood. Use planned road journeys between the valley's towns, allowing for traffic that can make short distances surprisingly slow.

Plan ahead

Check access and restoration conditions at individual monuments. Dress respectfully, walk around Buddhist stupas in the customary direction and ask before photographing rituals. Keep a safe distance from monkeys and secure loose belongings.

Why it stays with you

Boudhanath's great white dome and watchful painted eyes form the centre of a living pilgrimage circuit. At Swayambhunath, a hilltop setting opens views across the valley. In the historic towns, Newar craftsmanship appears in carved timber, brickwork, metalwork and the carefully composed relationships between buildings and public space.

Earthquake damage and reconstruction are part of the present story, alongside the continuity of worship and everyday commerce. Visit with patience and allow time to understand how places function now. A few well-chosen districts, explored with local knowledge, offer more than a hurried circuit of every listed monument.

Understand the wonder

The Kathmandu Valley is a network of living places.

The valley's royal squares, stupas and religious complexes reflect different communities and traditions. Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are not simply three versions of one old town. Craftsmanship in brick, timber and metal gives close detail to the larger urban spaces. Earthquake damage and restoration also belong to the visible story. A thoughtful itinerary compares a few places carefully and recognises that worship, commerce and ordinary life continue around them.

Beyond the familiar view

A valley of living heritage.

Kathmandu Valley's major squares and religious sites sit within communities that continue to use them. Looking closely at doors, rooflines and courtyards reveals details that a rapid circuit can miss. The different centres reward separate time and local interpretation.

The choice that changes the visit

Choose a manageable combination of places and allow for traffic. Respect worship and current access restrictions, including areas affected by conservation work.
