Viñales Valley

Limestone hills and cultivated valley floors make a cultural landscape whose character depends on both geology and farming.

Summary

Viñales Valley is a rural landscape in Cuba, where steep limestone hills rise above cultivated ground. Farms and settlements occupy the valley floor, connecting distinctive geology with continuing agricultural life.

The contrast between rock and working land gives the valley its identity. The scenery is striking because the cultivated spaces and monumental hills belong to the same lived-in landscape.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Viñales Valley (Spanish: Valle de Viñales) is a karstic depression in Cuba. The valley has an area of 132 km² (51 sq mi) and is located in the Sierra de los Órganos mountains (part of Guaniguanico range), just north of Viñales in the Pinar del Río Province. The extraordinary geomorphological formations known as mogotes, which are found nowhere else in Cuba, have sometimes not only attained the dimensions of mountains, but formed a variety of unusual shapes. The only comparable geological structures in the world are those found in Southeast Asia, in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, the Thai highlands, Laos, Vietnam, and in the South China Karst region.
