Summary

Guam is a Pacific island and United States territory, with coastal landscapes and a continuing CHamoru cultural identity. Colonial and wartime histories add several layers to its settlements and shores.

Its interest lies in those stories together. Natural scenery gains depth through local heritage and modern history, offering a view of the island beyond the familiar image of beaches and military sites.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Guam is an organised, unincorporated territory of the United States in the Micronesia subregion of the western Pacific Ocean. Guam's capital is Hagåtña, and the most populous village is Dededo. It is the westernmost point and territory of the United States, reckoned from the geographic centre of the U.S. Indigenous Guamanians are the Chamorro, who are related to the Austronesian peoples of the Malay Archipelago, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Polynesia. But unlike most of its neighbours, the Chamorro language is not classified as a Micronesian or Polynesian language. Rather, like Palauan, it possibly constitutes an independent branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family.
