Summary

Fogo is a volcanic island in Cape Verde, dominated by a high volcano and surrounding volcanic ground. Settlements and cultivation occupy a landscape whose forms continue to be affected by eruptions.

The island shows human adaptation within active geology. Cultivated spaces and homes give an immediate scale to the volcano, connecting dramatic scenery with the choices of people living beside it.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Fogo is an island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde in the central Atlantic Ocean. Its population is 35,837 (2015), with an area of 476 km² (184 sq mi). It reaches the highest altitude of all the islands in Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres (9,281 feet) above sea level at the summit of its active volcano, Pico do Fogo. Fogo was discovered in 1460 by Genovese captain António de Noli on behalf of Henry the Navigator and the Portuguese Crown. It appeared in a 1598 map as I. de Fogo. Fogo was the second island of Cape Verde that was settled by the Portuguese, between 1470 and 1490, making São Filipe the second oldest town of Cape Verde after Cidade Velha.
