Summary

Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago north of mainland Norway, with glaciers, mountain valleys, tundra and polar wildlife. Its settlements occupy small parts of a much larger landscape shaped by cold, sea and seasonal light.

It offers an exceptional encounter with the High Arctic. The contrast between sparse land, abundant seasonal life and traces of human industry makes its apparent emptiness far more complex than it first seems.

The story of a place

An Arctic archipelago where weather and wildlife set the rhythm.

Svalbard is an encounter with a polar environment, not simply a northern sightseeing destination. Glaciers, bare slopes and seasonal sea ice create a landscape whose apparent emptiness conceals complex ecological relationships.

Longyearbyen provides a starting point, but experiences beyond the settlement need appropriate organisation. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and keeping distance is part of responsible observation.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

Svalbard, formerly Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen, is a Norwegian archipelago that lies at the convergence of the Arctic Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean. North of mainland Europe, it lies about midway between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole. The islands of the group range from 74° to 81° north latitude, and from 10° to 35° east longitude. Whalers who sailed far north in the 17th and 18th centuries used the islands as a base; subsequently, the archipelago was abandoned. Coal mining started at the beginning of the 20th century, and several permanent communities such as Pyramiden and Barentsburg were established.
