Summary

Lofoten is an archipelago off northern Norway, where abrupt mountains rise above fishing villages, bays and beaches. The sea connects its settlements and has shaped both their architecture and their working traditions.

The contrast between steep rock and small inhabited shores gives the islands their distinctive scale. Fishing culture and changing northern light add depth to a landscape that is already visually extraordinary.

The story of a place

Fishing villages and abrupt mountains above northern seas.

Lofoten's mountains rise so quickly from the water that a short road journey can feel like a sequence of separate worlds. Harbours, beaches and settlements provide foregrounds that make the peaks more legible.

The islands are lived-in landscapes with fishing traditions, limited roads and seasonal pressures. A slower route with a few bases generally reveals more than a daily race along the archipelago.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Lofoten has distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches, and untouched lands. There are two towns, Svolvær and Leknes; the latter is approximately 169 km (105 mi) north of the Arctic Circle and approximately 2,420 km (1,500 mi) away from the North Pole. The town of Vågan (Old Norse: Vágar) is the first known town formation in northern Norway. It existed in the early Viking Age, maybe earlier, and was located on the southern coast of eastern Lofoten, near today's village Kabelvåg in Vågan Municipality.
