Summary

Khajuraho is a group of Hindu and Jain temples in central India. Their sculpted surfaces show deities, human figures and everyday scenes within buildings whose rising forms are as carefully composed as their ornament.

The temples reward looking beyond the famous erotic carvings. Their sculpture gives an unusually rich view of religious and human life, while the architecture turns those details into a coherent three-dimensional design.

The story of a place

Temple architecture whose sculpture deserves more than a quick glance.

Khajuraho is often reduced to its erotic carvings, but those form only part of a much broader sculptural world. Figures, deities, animals and architectural ornament work together across the temple surfaces.

Step back to read the overall form, then return to the details. The relationships between towers, platforms and carved bands are central to the experience.
