Summary

The White Desert is a protected landscape in Egypt, with pale chalk formations sculpted by erosion. Isolated shapes rise from open ground, where light and shadow continually change the appearance of the rock.

The forms make the desert unusually expressive. Close shapes and broad spaces offer different perspectives, showing how a spare landscape can contain remarkable variety through texture and scale.

History, landscape and context.

Sahara el Beyda, the White Desert Protected Area, is a national park in Egypt, first established as a protected area in 2002. It is located in the Farafra depression, 45 km (28 mi) north of the town of Qasr Al Farafra. Part of the park is in the Farafra Oasis (New Valley Governorate).
