A detail that changes the visit
Distinguish the sculpted surface from the building beneath it; take time for details, not just the main pyramid.

For the curious reader
History, landscape and context.
Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period located in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Palenque, Chichen Itza and Calakmul in Mexico, Caracol and Xunantunich in Belize, and Tikal in Guatemala. It is located in the Puuc region of the western Yucatán Peninsula, and is considered one of the Maya cities most representative of the region's dominant architectural style. Uxmal is located 62 km south of Mérida, capital of Yucatán state in Mexico. Its buildings are noted for their size and decoration.

From inspiration to a practical plan
Plan your visit.
- Physical demands
- The visit involves exposed paths, uneven stone surfaces and heat across a large archaeological site. Do not build the plan around climbing a structure unless that access is expressly permitted.
- The consequential detail
- Distinguish the sculpted surface from the building beneath it; take time for details, not just the main pyramid.
