Summary

Sian Ka’an is a protected coastal landscape in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Tropical forest, wetlands, lagoons and Caribbean marine habitats form a connected environment with rich plant and animal life.

The wonder is the meeting of habitats. Fresh water, forest and sea support different forms of life within one landscape, making the coastal system more interesting than an isolated beach or reef.

The story of a place

Where forest, wetland and Caribbean water meet

Sian Ka’an is a mosaic of tropical forest, wetlands, mangroves, lagoons and marine environments. Its interest is in the connections between those habitats. Water changes the character of the landscape, and different access areas offer substantially different experiences.

Choose an excursion for its route and interpretation rather than the promise of a single wildlife sighting. A quiet passage through a waterway or time observing an island edge can reveal more than a rushed circuit. The surrounding Maya cultural landscape also gives the reserve a human context.
