Summary

Toledo is a historic hilltop city in Spain, enclosed in part by the Tagus River. Churches, former synagogues, Islamic heritage and winding streets reveal successive communities within a dense urban landscape.

Its significance emerges from the layers rather than one monument. Different religious and architectural traditions remain visible close together, making the city a particularly rich record of cultural history.

History, landscape and context.

Toledo is a city and municipality in Spain. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and the de jure seat of the government and parliament of the autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha. The old city is located on a mountaintop with a 150-degree view, surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Tagus River, and contains many historical sites, including the Alcázar, the cathedral (the primate church of Spain), and the Zocodover, a central market place. From the 4th century to the 16th century, about thirty synods were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillian, was assembled in 400.
