Summary

Koh Ker is a former Khmer capital in northern Cambodia, with a striking stepped pyramid and scattered temple remains. Its buildings occupy a forested landscape that differs in scale and arrangement from Angkor.

The pyramid provides a dramatic focus, but the surrounding sites give it depth. Together they reveal another period of Khmer ambition through a distinctive architectural landscape.

Getting there

Plan a road trip from Siem Reap or a northern Cambodia base to Koh Ker. Arrange a driver for the full temple circuit and return journey.

Check Koh Ker’s own ticket arrangements; do not assume an Angkor pass covers it. Ask which structures and stairways are currently open.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Koh Ker is a remote archaeological site in northern Cambodia about 120 kilometres (75 mi) away from Siem Reap and the ancient site of Angkor. It is a jungle filled region that is sparsely populated. More than 180 sanctuaries were found in a protected area of 81 square kilometres (31 sq mi). Koh Ker is situated between the southern slopes of the Dangrek mountains, the Kulen mountains (Phnom Kulen) in the south-west, and the Tbeng mountain (Phnom Tbeng, near Tbeng Meanchey) in the east. Most parts of the hilly ground are covered by jungle, but most of the trees shed their leaves seasonally.
