Summary

The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos are historic mission towns in eastern Bolivia. Churches with elaborate timber craftsmanship stand within communities where religious, musical and local cultural traditions remain active.

Their value lies in living continuity as well as architecture. The wooden interiors and the towns around them reveal a distinctive meeting of Indigenous and European histories.

The story of a place

Living mission towns and extraordinary wooden architecture

The missions of Chiquitos form a dispersed cultural landscape in eastern Bolivia. Their churches combine European religious models with local materials, craftsmanship and traditions. Wooden columns, broad roofs and rich interiors deserve close attention, but the settlements around them are part of the story.

These are living towns and places of worship, not abandoned stage sets. A thoughtful visit allows time for the spaces around each church and for the differences between individual ensembles. The shared history does not make every mission architecturally identical.

History, landscape
and context.

The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos are located in the Santa Cruz department in eastern Bolivia. Six of these former missions collectively were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Distinguished by a unique fusion of European and Amerindian cultural influences, the missions were founded as reductions or reducciones de indios by Jesuits in the 17th and 18th centuries to convert local tribes to Christianity.
