The story of a place
Timber churches within a rural landscape of extraordinary craft.
The wooden churches of Maramureș combine tall, slender forms with carefully worked timber and painted interiors. Their village settings are essential to understanding them as places of worship rather than isolated architectural objects.
The UNESCO group includes specific churches, not every wooden building in the region. Plan visits around actual access and allow time for the rural distances between them.

For the curious reader
History, landscape
and context.
The wooden churches of Maramureș in the Maramureș region of northern Transylvania are a group of almost one hundred Orthodox churches, and occasionally Greek-Catholic ones, of different architectural solutions from different periods and areas. The Maramureș churches are high timber constructions with characteristic tall, slim bell towers at the western end of the building. They are a particular vernacular expression of the cultural landscape of this mountainous area of northern Romania. Maramureș is one of the better-known regions of Romania, with autonomous traditions since the Middle Ages. Its well-preserved wooden villages and churches, its traditional lifestyle, and the local colourful dresses still in use make Maramureș as near to a living museum as can be found in Europe.

Turn curiosity into a visit
Plan your visit.
- Physical demands
- Modest walking, steps and uneven village surfaces.
- The practical detail
- A beautiful exterior does not guarantee that an interior will be open on arrival. At Bârsana, distinguish the historic UNESCO-listed church from the modern monastery complex.
