Summary

The High Tatras are a compact mountain range on the border of Slovakia and Poland. Sharp peaks, glacial lakes and steep valleys rise above forests and settlements along their lower slopes.

Their compactness makes the mountain character particularly striking. High alpine forms appear within a relatively concentrated region, with lakes and valleys giving different perspectives on the same rugged skyline.

The story of a place

A compact alpine range with serious mountain character.

The High Tatras compress sharp peaks, glacial lakes and deep valleys into a relatively small area. Their compact map appearance can conceal steep terrain and demanding routes.

Slovak and Polish approaches offer different bases and access systems. Choose one area carefully and leave flexibility for weather rather than trying to cross the entire range quickly.

History, landscape
and context.

The High Tatras or High Tatra Mountains (Slovak: Vysoké Tatry; Polish: Tatry Wysokie; Rusyn: Высокы Татры, Vŷsokŷ Tatrŷ; German: Hohe Tatra; Hungarian: Magas-Tátra), are a mountain range along the border of northern Slovakia in the Prešov Region, and southern Poland in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. They are a range of the Tatra Mountains chain. The mountain range borders the Belianske Tatras to the east, the Podtatranská kotlina to the south, and the Western Tatras to the west. Most of the range, and all the highest peaks, are in Slovakia. The highest peak is Gerlachovský štít, at 2,655 metres (8,711 ft).
