Summary

The Kerala Backwaters are a network of lagoons, canals and waterways along India’s southwestern coast. Villages, cultivated land and boats form part of a landscape in which water connects everyday life.

The appeal is movement through an inhabited waterscape. Small changes along the banks reveal work, settlement and ecology, giving the scenery a human scale beyond the familiar houseboat image.

The story of a place

A network of waterways whose appeal lies in everyday life as much as scenery.

Kerala's backwaters connect lakes, canals, fields and settlements in a low-lying coastal landscape. Slow travel can reveal work, transport and cultivation that disappear from a purely resort-focused view.

Boat choice matters. Smaller, responsibly operated experiences may provide a closer understanding of local life, while waste management and respect for residents should shape any overnight option.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

The Kerala backwaters are a network of brackish lagoons and canals running parallel to the Arabian Sea along the Malabar Coast of Kerala, India. It also includes interconnected lakes, rivers, and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km (560 mi) of waterways, and is sometimes compared to bayous. The network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both artificial and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of the Kerala state.
