Summary

Évora is a historic city in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Roman remains, medieval streets, religious buildings and later architecture occupy a compact centre within a wider agricultural landscape.

Successive periods remain visible together throughout Évora’s streets and public spaces. The surviving layers make a coherent city, where major monuments gain depth from the streets and spaces connecting them.

The story of a place

A compact city in which Roman, medieval and later layers remain visible.

Évora's appeal comes from the proximity of different periods. Roman temple remains, cathedral architecture, streets and domestic buildings form a walkable historical sequence.

The surrounding Alentejo provides another scale of experience. Slow meals, regional landscapes and selected nearby sites make the city a base rather than just a brief stop.
