Reading a travel photograph
Looking at framing, light, viewpoint and omissions as well as the place depicted.

A photograph is a view from somewhere at a particular moment. The frame can hide a road, a crowd, a steep approach or the wider scale of a landscape. A dramatic perspective may compress distance or make one part of a site appear much larger than another.
Compare a broad view, a medium-distance view and a detail. Together they can explain how the place fits together more effectively than several versions of the same famous angle. Captions and credits help identify what the image shows, when that information is available, and who made it.
For planning, photographs are inspiration and evidence of appearance, not a guarantee of current conditions. For understanding, the best question is often what the picture leaves outside its edges. The photo wall is designed to encourage comparison as well as admiration.

A question to take with you
What would you need to see outside the frame to understand the place more fully?
