Summary

Trogir is a historic town on Croatia’s Adriatic coast, with a compact island centre. Stone streets, churches and its cathedral preserve a dense architectural ensemble linked with the surrounding water.

The small scale makes the craftsmanship particularly accessible. Carved detail and carefully connected spaces give depth to a town whose broad silhouette is already striking.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Trogir is a historic town and harbour on the Adriatic coast in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia, with a population of 10,107 (2021) and a total municipal population of 12,393 (2021). The historic part of the city is situated on a small island between the Croatian mainland and the island of Čiovo. It lies 27 kilometres (17 miles) west of the city of Split. During the migration of Croats the citizens of the destroyed Salona escaped to Trogir. Initially the Roman Tragurium (Latin: Tragurium) was one of the Dalmatian City-States. From the 9th century on, Trogir paid tribute to Croatian rulers and to the Byzantine empire.
