Summary

Ganvié is a settlement built over Lake Nokoué in Benin. Houses, boats and waterways reveal a community whose transport and daily routines are closely adapted to life on the water.

Settlement and environment are inseparable in Ganvié’s distinctive built landscape. Water is the organising space of everyday life, making the built landscape fundamentally different from a conventional town beside a lake.
