Summary

Brimstone Hill Fortress is a substantial historic fortification on Saint Kitts in the Caribbean. Walls and military spaces occupy an elevated island site, reflecting imperial rivalry and the labour behind colonial defence.

The commanding views explain the strategic design. Understanding who built and used the fortress gives the monumental architecture a depth beyond its striking position above the sea.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

British engineers used a steep volcanic hill to develop a defensive system during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Enslaved Africans built and maintained the fortress, whose history is inseparable from Caribbean colonial expansion and the slave trade. Bastions, barracks and cisterns occupy different levels, while local basalt and limestone helped give the buildings their form. The fort’s walls and spaces explain both the demands of defence and the labour that made it possible.
