Summary

The Bale Mountains are a highland region in Ethiopia, with broad plateaux and contrasting forest environments. Distinctive plants and animals occupy habitats strongly shaped by changes in altitude.

The range’s appeal lies in its ecological differences. High open ground and enclosed forest reveal sharply contrasting natural worlds within one mountain landscape.

Allow time

4 days as an initial allowance, excluding approach travel

Choose a base

Dinsho or an established Bale base

Getting there

Plan the road approach to Dinsho or Goba around the park sector you want to explore. The Sanetti Plateau and Harenna Forest need separate travel time.

Plan ahead

Check Ethiopia’s regional advice and the actual approach roads before booking. Arrange park access, a local guide and suitable transport through the park or an established operator.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

The park's Afromontane habitats have one of the highest incidences of animal endemism of any terrestrial habitat in the world. The park was nominated to the UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage sites in 2009, and inscribed on the List of World Heritage Sites in Ethiopia in 2023. Bale Mountains National Park covers an area of 215,000 ha (530,000 acres) in the Bale Zone of the Oromia Region of southeastern Ethiopia, roughly 400 km (250 mi) southeast of Addis Ababa and 150 km (93 mi) east of Shashamane.
