Pompeii or Rome?

An excavated city or a living city full of ancient layers.

The useful answer

Choose Pompeii for sustained attention to an ancient urban landscape. Choose Rome for the way ancient remains, later architecture and contemporary life overlap. If you have enough time, the two are complementary rather than redundant.

The key distinction is not the importance of the history. It is how you want to encounter it.

A coherent archaeological day

Pompeii lets you follow streets, houses and civic spaces within one excavated city. The reward comes from context: a doorway beside a shop, a decorative scheme within a house, a route across a public space. Give the park a proper day and check which buildings are open.

A conversation across centuries

Rome is more dispersed and more layered. A good visit combines a small number of major booked sites with walks and museums that explain the fragments. It demands selective planning because the city offers far more than one short stay can absorb.

The practical decision

If your main interest is domestic and everyday Roman life, Pompeii is a powerful focus. If you want a broader city holiday with ancient history running through it, Rome is the stronger base. Combine them only with a real transfer day and enough time for both, not as a rushed add-on.
