A journey worth taking

Two parks provide a remarkable range of landscapes. Olympic spans coast, temperate rainforest and mountain country. Mount Rainier centres the view on a great volcano and the environments around it.

The parks are not two adjacent attractions reached from one convenient gate. Choose entrances and bases first, then create a road route between them. A visit can be rich without attempting every district.

Choose your pace

A starting outline

Both parks remain in the shorter version. If you have less time, choose one park and explore it through two or three contrasting areas.

Add a day at each base for weather flexibility and a slower walk.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Olympic National Park

Pick a rainforest, a coastal area and a mountain or lake visit if access allows. Let each have enough time to reveal a different ecosystem. The driving between districts is part of the plan, not a reason to shorten every walk to a photograph.

Suggested base: Bases chosen for the Olympic districts you will visit. Allow 5 days here.

Mount Rainier

Start with an accessible viewpoint or visitor area, then choose walks suited to the snow, weather and your ability. A good day might be one carefully selected trail and an unhurried view, rather than a circuit of distant park entrances.

Suggested base: A base near the Rainier entrance you choose. Allow 4 days here.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

Summer generally offers the widest road access, with busy periods at popular places. Spring and autumn can suit some lower areas, while high routes may still have snow or restricted access.

Access and arrangements

Check NPS road status and current entry arrangements. Coastal walks at Olympic require tide awareness; mountain routes at Rainier require current trail and weather information.
