Uzbekistan: two Silk Road cities

Samarkand and Bukhara, with time to look closely.

A journey worth taking

Samarkand and Bukhara are a powerful pairing because they are not interchangeable. One offers monumental ensembles of striking scale; the other rewards the relationships between streets, courts, trading spaces and religious buildings. Their colours may first attract the eye, but their urban form sustains the interest.

Keep the route simple. Arrive through a gateway that suits your flights and use the rail network for the central connection. Leave time to return to an ensemble after the first impression has settled.

Choose your pace

A starting outline

This is already a two-base route. The shorter setting keeps both cities; reduce individual days in the workbench only after checking your arrival and departure travel.

Add a day in each city for museums, smaller monuments and a slower second walk.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Registan Square, Samarkand

Compare major ensembles instead of simply moving from one tiled façade to the next. Pay attention to scale, approach, inscriptions and the spaces between buildings. Give a museum or archaeological context visit its own block to widen the story beyond the most restored monuments.

Suggested base: Samarkand. Allow 3 days here.

Bukhara

Read Bukhara as a linked urban landscape. Walk between a small number of trading, religious and civic spaces, then compare their proportions and routes of approach. Leave room for an ordinary street or courtyard that does not feature in a standard checklist.

Suggested base: Bukhara old city. Allow 4 days here.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for long urban walks. Summer heat and winter cold change the pace and the amount of time you may want outdoors.

Access and arrangements

Book the actual rail service and confirm the station and final transfer. Bukhara’s railway arrival is outside the old city.
