A journey worth taking

The route joins geothermal and tectonic landscapes with glaciers and the southern coast. Its appeal is not a collection of roadside photographs but the way different processes become visible over a relatively coherent journey.

Use two broad stages and sensible overnight stops. Conditions can alter a road itinerary quickly, especially outside the long-day season. Keep the final return towards your departure airport separate from the last ambitious excursion.

Choose your pace

A starting outline

The shorter setting retains both regions. For a genuinely short break, focus on the southwest and omit the long southeast extension.

Add a weather day to each region and an extra overnight on the return journey if it makes the driving more comfortable.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Iceland's Golden Circle

Give Þingvellir, the geothermal area and Gullfoss different kinds of attention. Read the first through landforms and history, the second through active processes and the third through water and scale. Stay on the authorised routes and leave space for changing conditions.

Suggested base: Reykjavík or a southwest base. Allow 3 days here.

Vatnajökull National Park

Use a visitor centre to orient yourself, then select viewpoints and walks appropriate to the forecast. A guided glacier experience is a separate booking with specific equipment and conditions. Give the landscape room to change as cloud, light and water shift.

Suggested base: A confirmed southeast base, such as Skaftafell-area accommodation or Höfn. Allow 4 days here.

Dotted lines show the sequence between orientation points, not a driving route or transport service. Zoom or select a pin to open its guide.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

Summer offers long daylight and a different driving experience from winter. Winter may suit a specific guided activity, but requires a deliberately different itinerary and more contingency.

Access and arrangements

Check road conditions, weather warnings and site notices each day. Glacier travel and ice-cave visits require an appropriate qualified operator and current conditions.
