France: a capital, a river and the tide

A journey worth taking

This journey moves from the scale of a capital to a landscape of royal residences, then to a tidal island. In each place, setting matters as much as the building. Paris is read through streets and riverbanks; the Loire through the relationship between château, garden and countryside; Mont Saint-Michel through the changing space around it.

Choose a small number of Loire sites and a practical base. A list of châteaux is not a route until you have checked the final connection from the station. The final transfer to the Mont deserves its own day.

Choose your pace

A starting outline

Finish in the Loire for the shorter version. Paris and a carefully chosen pair of châteaux provide plenty of variety.

Add a second Loire base only if it materially improves access. Otherwise use the extra days to revisit a garden or explore a town.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Paris, Versailles & Chartres

Give the major museum collections, the city itself and any excursion to Versailles or Chartres distinct days. Choose what you want to understand, not simply what you can fit in. A river walk between two neighbourhoods can connect the architecture more effectively than another rushed interior.

Suggested base: Paris. Allow 4 days here.

Loire Valley Châteaux

Choose two or three contrasting residences rather than a long circuit. Compare defensive forms, Renaissance detail, formal gardens and river settings. Keep enough time for the landscape between them, whether explored by local transport, cycle or a carefully chosen driving route.

Suggested base: Tours or Amboise. Allow 3 days here.

Mont Saint-Michel

Spend time watching the relationship between the island and the bay, then explore the village and abbey. An overnight nearby gives more flexibility than a short coach stop. The changing light and tide are part of the experience, but never a reason to improvise a walk across the sands.

Suggested base: Pontorson, the mainland near the Mont, or the Mont itself. Allow 2 days here.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

Late spring to early autumn suits gardens and long outdoor days. Winter offers a different experience but requires close attention to shorter days and reduced services.

Access and arrangements

The Loire can be explored partly by rail, with local connections planned individually. Mont Saint-Michel involves a shuttle or approach route and steep lanes; a guided bay walk is a separate activity.
