A journey worth taking

Start with ordinary lives rather than a roll-call of monuments. At Pompeii, a doorway, street surface or domestic image can make the Roman city feel startlingly close. Paestum gives you a different scale and atmosphere: Greek temples standing in an open landscape. The coast then changes the rhythm from excavated streets to a living chain of towns.

This is a regional trip, not an attempt to add all southern Italy. Base changes and coastal transport deserve real time. Decide whether the pleasure you want is a long archaeological day, a walk between settlements or a slower afternoon beside the sea.

Choose your pace

A starting outline

The shorter version concentrates on Pompeii and Paestum, leaving the coast for another visit.

Add time for Herculaneum, the Naples archaeological collections or a slower coastal stay. These are extra experiences within the region, not extra ranks added to the collection.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis

Keep Pompeii as a full, unhurried day. Choose a few houses and civic spaces to examine rather than attempting every open building. Use another day for Herculaneum or Oplontis, checking current opening arrangements first. Compare how scale, decoration and preservation change your understanding of Roman life.

Suggested base: Naples or Pompei. Allow 3 days here.

Paestum

Give the temples time in changing light, and pair the outdoor remains with the museum. The point is not to collect three similar façades: compare their proportions, setting and the relationship between the religious buildings and the wider settlement.

Suggested base: Paestum or Salerno. Allow 2 days here.

Amalfi Coast

Choose one town as home and explore neighbouring places at a manageable pace. Alternate built heritage with a coastal walk or boat journey. Leave a free afternoon: the quality of this part of the trip comes from inhabiting the landscape, not continually changing accommodation.

Suggested base: A single Amalfi Coast town. Allow 3 days here.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

The shoulder seasons can balance archaeological visits and coastal exploration. Ferries and seasonal services vary, so a winter version needs a different transport plan.

Access and arrangements

Excavations have uneven ground, exposed sections and specific accessible routes. Coastal towns can involve substantial steps. Check access information for the places you select.
