A journey worth taking

This is a large-landscape route, and the distances need to remain visible. The Grand Canyon reveals depth and layered rock on a vast scale. Utah’s canyon country offers many distinct forms across a broad region. Death Valley shifts the emphasis to basins, fans, salts and the force of heat.

Select a small Utah sub-route instead of attempting every national park. A good desert journey has room for weather, rest and the long drive between bases. The order here is an orientation framework to adapt to your actual gateway.

Choose your pace

A starting outline

The shorter version ends in Utah’s canyon country and omits the long Death Valley extension.

Add days within the chosen parks. Avoid using every extra day to expand the driving circuit.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Grand Canyon

Use viewpoints to follow a few rock layers and understand the scale of the incision. Add a short walk appropriate to conditions and your ability. A descent is an entirely different undertaking; the easy start downhill should not determine the ambition of the day.

Suggested base: A confirmed Grand Canyon rim base. Allow 3 days here.

National Parks of Utah & Colorado

Choose a few contrasting landscapes and explore them properly. Compare a narrow canyon with open sandstone country, then use a visitor centre or interpretation stop to understand the processes involved. Keep the day’s driving visible alongside its walks.

Suggested base: One or two bases in the Utah canyon region. Allow 5 days here.

Death Valley

Choose a few viewpoints and short activities suited to the season. Look at the difference between the valley floor, alluvial fans and distant mountains. Keep enough margin to enjoy the scale of the place without continually pushing towards the next stop.

Suggested base: A confirmed Death Valley or nearby base. Allow 3 days here.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

For a general low-elevation walking trip, investigate the cooler parts of the year. Elevation changes the picture: cold or snow at a rim can coexist with much warmer conditions below. Summer heat can make some activities inappropriate.

Access and arrangements

Use each park’s current notices, road status and specific activity guidance. A rim viewpoint, a short desert walk and a canyon descent have very different demands.
