A journey worth taking

Walled coastal settlements and inland water landscapes make a striking contrast. Dubrovnik and Kotor reward attention to the relation between fortifications, settlement and terrain. Plitvice and Krka shift the focus to water, vegetation and the routes through protected landscapes.

This is a cross-border road framework, not a promise of seamless transport. Kotor adds a different country and an extra transfer. The final Croatian stage is geographically broad: select Plitvice, Krka or a carefully planned combination.

A starting outline

The shorter setting retains all three stages because the intermediate stop shapes the route. For a smaller journey, remove Kotor in the workbench and research the direct Croatian connection.

Add time in the same bases rather than trying to make every town along the coast a stop.

Every transfer is allocated separately from the sightseeing days. Arrival at the first base and departure from the last are outside this outline.

Dubrovnik

Read the city walls as part of a working settlement, then explore streets and interiors at ground level. Give the coast and harbour their own time. The most rewarding day may combine a short major visit with a less crowded part of the city.

Suggested base: Dubrovnik. Allow 3 days here.

Bay of Kotor

Explore the bay as a landscape, not simply a walled town. Compare the close streets with the surrounding slopes and water. Choose a climb only if it suits conditions and your ability; the setting can also be appreciated without a strenuous ascent.

Suggested base: Kotor or another Bay of Kotor base. Allow 3 days here.

Plitvice and Krka National Parks

Choose the park experience you most want. Follow authorised boardwalks and paths, using the route length and current open sections to plan the day. If visiting both Plitvice and Krka, add the transfer between them explicitly within your stay or extend it.

Suggested base: A base chosen specifically for Plitvice or Krka. Allow 4 days here.

Season and practical choices

When to consider it

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for walking. Summer can be busy and hot at the coast; inland conditions and park access need separate checks.

Access and arrangements

Check border and rental-vehicle arrangements if crossing between Croatia and Montenegro. Use each park’s official access guidance and current ticket arrangements.
