Summary

The Simien Mountains are a high escarpment landscape in Ethiopia, with cliffs, plateaux and deep valleys. Their habitats support distinctive wildlife, including geladas, within country that is also shaped by cultivation and settlement.

The abrupt edges and vast views give the mountains their drama. Wildlife and inhabited uplands add a closer scale, making the region a meeting of spectacular terrain and distinctive highland life.

The story of a place

A high escarpment landscape with remarkable endemic wildlife.

The Simien Mountains combine abrupt cliffs, broad plateaux and deep valleys. Walking along a permitted escarpment route reveals changes in scale that a single panoramic view cannot convey.

Geladas and other highland wildlife form part of a living landscape also used by local communities. Current regional access and security conditions are fundamental to any travel decision.

History, landscape
and context.

Simien Mountains National Park is the largest national park in Ethiopia. Located in the North Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, its territory covers the highest parts of the Simien Mountains and includes Ras Dashan, the highest point in Ethiopia. Simien Mountains National Park is located on the western side of the Simien Mountains and is 120 kilometres (75 mi) from the Gondar province of Begemder in the northwestern part of Ethiopia. It is located within the Simien Massif, which rises above the northern highlands of Ethiopia. The highlands were formed by volcanic flood basalts dating from the Paleogene period roughly 30 million years ago.
